4.5 Measuring distances accurately
For distances longer than 2 m, a measuring tape or a builder’s
tape measure works better than a metre stick.
1. (a) You can use a builder’s tape measure to measure the
distance from the door of the classroom to the teacher’s
desk. Write the distance in metres and centimetres. What
plan can you make if you do not have a builder’s tape
measure?
(b) Estimate how far it is from the back of the class to the
teacher’s desk. Use your measurement in (a) to help you.
(c) Compare your estimate with the estimates of other
learners. Discuss how much your estimates differ.
Measure the distance from the back of the class to the
teacher’s desk. Whose estimate was closest?
(d) Work in pairs. Measure the distance around the class.
Compare your measurements. Discuss how much your
measurement differs from other learners’ measurements.
